Genealogy – Ingevald

Genealogy, the Swedish Connection & the History of ‘Ingevald’

My Swedish family history is outlined below.   There are also a few stories buried within.  The Roman numerals & zeros (I did not originally anticipate how far back the generations would go) separate the generations.  This outline shows only my direct family links in Sweden, starting with the oldest first.    All of the Swedish family connections are firmly rooted in southern Sweden, in the southern part of the province called Småland.   Within Småland (which means ‘small lands’) my Swedish ancestors lived in the ancient land called Värend (see the photo below from Wikipedia Commons). There are distant relatives still living in this part of Sweden. I was fortunate to have visited many of them when I was there in 2000.   One family farm, Sandåsen, has been occupied by family members for at least 13 generations (since the 1500’s) according to my relatives, who are living there at this time.

The parishes of Urshult, Almundsryd, Skatelöv, Västra Torsås and a few others are tied to my family’s history.  These parishes are located around the outskirsts of Lake Åsnen and all are in Kronoberg Län (county).   Specific farm names are included within many of the entries.  Click here for a translated Wikipedia article on Småland. The coat of arms for Småland is from Wikipedia Commons.

If you find that you are connected to any of these family lines, please contact me. The information below is accurate to the best of my knowledge, relying on microfilm documents from church records and data supplied by family members.

I highly recommend the book, ‘The Emigrants’ by Vilhelm Moberg.   It is well written historical fiction about a family that lived in Småland in an area not too far from my ancestors and in a very similar timeframe.     His book describes the challenging living conditions in the mid 1800’s which resulted in so many folks leaving Sweden.   He also describes the difficult journey across the ocean.

Photos are included from my travels and other sources.  I have also included many photos of the parish churches.  Some of these churches existed when direct line relatives lived in these areas in Sweden.   In the case of the older ancestors, these older wooden churches were replaced by the newer masonry churches.  Comments on photos are in blue.

Klasamåla is an area that is made up of many small farms.  It was divided up sometime in the past and one would need to find the old maps to try to find exactly where the old houses were.
