2013, December 12 – Ingevalds reunion at Rosemary’s house in Lawrence – Byron, Theresa, Rosemary, and Juliet.
2013, November 2nd – Ingevalds Spelmän played at a memorial service for Linnea Johnson in Topeka. Musicians participating include Byron, Theresa, Carolyn and Suzy.
2013, October 25 to 27 – Swedish music weekend at Folklore Village. Byron, Theresa and Suzy attended.
2013, September 5 – Theresa and Lauralyn both playing Nyckelharpa here in Lawrence.
2013, October 5th – The 12th annual Nordic Heritage Festival happened here in Lawrence. Our featured performer was Becky Weis. She gave a concert on nyckelharpa.
2013, Sept 27 – Lyy (from Sweden) gave our community a fabulous concert at the Union Pacific Depot here in Lawrence. The following day, Lyy played for a dance party in Kansas City.
2013, July 18 – HFAA annual workshops at Folklore Village.
2013, June 30 to July 7th – Nordic Fiddles and Feet. We attended the Scandinavian music and dance camp in at Camp Ogontz in New Hampshire. The camp keeps getting better and better!
2013 – May 2 – We played a concert at the Linwood Public Library. Musicians included Carolyn, Theresa, Helen, Byron and Suzy.
2013 – March 24 – Sara Pajunen gave us a very fine solo concert. It also happened on a very snowy and cold day, creating a beautiful background for this Nordic musical event at the Unitarian Fellowship building in Lawrence.
2013 – March 16 – Norwegian weekend at Folklore Village. Some nice Røros pols tunes were taught by Mary Barthelemy.
2013 – January 28 – We have had four days of music with Ruth who is visiting from afar. Tonight was declared to be our first annual Slängpolska session and then melted down into playing some awesome Gästrikland tunes.
2013 – January 26 – Our 6th annual Scandinavian Winter Party was held at the Unitarian Fellowship building. Musicians included Byron, Theresa, Ruth, Suzy, Carolyn and guests Jennifer and Lauralyn. The party was highly successful. Very good food, good music and a lot of people dancing!
2013 – January 12 – We played for the annual Facklan Lodge Scandinavian Christmas party in Kansas City. Byron and Theresa were the musicians.
2012? – November 24 – Ingevald’s reunion music jam – (This is likely 2012 but a small chance this was actually 2013). Theresa, Byron, Rosemary and Ruth.
2012 – October 26-28 – Folklore Village Swedish weekend event. Byron, Theresa and Suzy went to the event!
2012 – October 6 – Nordic Heritage Festival. Byron had his usual musical instrument and art exhibition booth. Andrea Een was our special performer, giving a very enjoyable concert on the Hardanger Fiddle.
2012, September 22 – Kansas City Renaissance Festival. Byron, Theresa and Helen played for a dance performance featuring the Kansas City Scandinavian Dancers.
2012 – August 9 – Vinland Fair. Theresa and Byron participated in the Talent Show event..
2012 – August 7 – Theresa made performed some maintenance and repair on a nyckelharpa.
2012 – July 27 – Nordic Festival in Decorah, Iowa. We went up on a bus with the Sons of Norway group in Kansas City. It was a fun trip and enjoyed seeing the festival again. It was packed with activities and performances. The evening street dance was impressive. A lot of people were participating while Foot Notes played.
2012 – July 19 to 22nd – HFAA annual workshop at Folklore Village.
2012 – July 1st to July 8th – Nordic Fiddles and Feet Camp at Camp Ogontz in northern New Hampshire. The camp was fabulous this year, as always. Theresa and I attended this time. Excellent fiddle and dancing workshops, good jamming opportunities, great food and the scenery was as beautiful as it always is. I am looking forward to the next one! I am also the new director!
2012 – May 24 – The 5-string banjo was my first folk instrument and still get it out occasionally.
2012 – March 31 – We played for the Kansas City Scandinavian Dancers in their major performance at the Ethnic Enrichment Commission’s Diplomatic Ball. It was an amazing and exciting event. Musicians included Byron, Theresa, Suzy, Carolyn and Helen.
2012 – March 31 – Bruce Sagan was in town for a math conference. He was one of my (Byron’s) early Scandinavian music influences. For me it all started at the Scandinavian Week camp in 1992 and Bruce was the director and I remember him playing both Swedish fiddle and the nyckelharpa. Theresa and I had an amazing afternoon jam session with Bruce.
2012 -February 11 – We had our 5th annual Scandinavian Winter Party at the Unitarian Fellowship. Musicians were Byron, Theresa, Carolyn, Suzy and Helen. Excellent potluck dinner and good music!
2012 – January 6 – Ingevalds dinner party at Byron’s.
2012 – January 3 – Ruth and Rosemary were in town. A good reason for a Scandi music evening!
2011 – November 20 – Pilgrims Progression contra dance weekend in Lawrence. The jam session after the Saturday dance was quite nice at the Pennington’s house. The Grouchy Geezers were the band (nice to see friends Joel Hayes, Jeff Haemer, and Ron Summers).
2011 – October 28-30 – Folklore Village’s Swedish music weekend event! Byron, Theresa, Helen and Suzy attended.
2011 – October 8 – Hyllningsfest in Lindsborg, KS. Ingevalds Spelmän played at the event. Musicians were Carolyn, Theresa and Byron. We also saw a very fine concert by Bjärv.
2011 – October 1 – The 10th annual Nordic Heritage Festival in Lawrence. Ingevald’s played for dancing.
2011 – August 28 – Kansas Fiddling and Picking in South Park, Lawrence. Ruth played the Nyckelharpa in the Miscellaneous Musical Instrument Contest and took second place.
2011 – August 11 – Vinland Fair. Theresa, Byron and Rosemary played at the talent show. The photo shows the line up. The Alferd Packer Memorial String band sang some great songs that late afternoon!
2011 – August 9 – Another fine Scandinavian music evening. Another session with Rosemary before she heads back to school. Rosemary, Byron, Helen, Theresa and Carolyn.
2011 – August 6 – A fine evening jam at Daryl’s house. Carolyn, Patrick, Julie, Byron, Theresa and Daryl. We all looked forward to the road trip to Overbrook.
2011 – August 2 – Rosemary, Helen, Theresa, Carolyn and Byron – Rosemary was in town – a good reason to make some music.
2011 – July 20-24 – Theresa and Byron went to the Hardanger Fiddle Association’s (HFAA) annual workshop and meeting at Folklore Village in southwestern Wisconsin. The fiddle workshops, jam sessions, food, concert, talent showcase, dance parties and people were fabulous. This was Byron’s 18th pilgrimage to this fine event.
2011 – June 19 – We hosted a Scandinavian musical concert featuring Tim Rued at the ECM building. In the afternoon we spent some time playing with him and learned a couple of interesting Gästrikland tunes. At the evening performance he played tunes on his fiddle and nyckelharpa. He also shared some very interesting stories about the tunes.
2011 – June 26 – July 3 – Nordic Fiddles and Feet Scandinavian music and dance camp in northern New Hampshire. Byron, Theresa and Ruth attended this year’s fine event! Our Swedish fiddle instructors – Thomas and Marit Westling and Torbjörn Näsbom (Nyckelharpa) were fabulous. The evening dance parties were amazing events with a very good variety of dances and music. In addition to the fine music instruction, all of the concerts, superb food and people made this a top notch event.

A few notes – The first photo below “Celestial Waters” was taken from the boathouse in the evening light. None of my photos have been manipulated in any way except that this one was flipped upside down. It looks like a block print and is magical.
Other exceptional photos are ones taken at the waterfall area (old mill dam) in Bradford, Vermont. That was quite a beautiful place on the way up to camp.
2011 – June 25 – The Kansas City Midsommar celebration happened at the Hollis Renewal Center in Bonner Springs, KS. Jill Adams provided music.
2011 – May 28 – We played for the Lawrence Farmers Market. Theresa, Byron, Emma, Helen and Suzy played.
2011 – May 7 – Dance party at the Unitarian Fellowship building! Theresa, Emma, Jacob, Suzy, Carolyn, Helen and Byron played for the event.
2011 – May 4 – Our group played for the Lawrence Music Club’s annual National Music Week concert at the Lawrence Public Library. Musicians included Byron, Theresa, Carolyn, Suzy, Helen and Emma.
2011, April 19 – We played for the Tuesday Concert series in the lobby of the Lawrence Arts Center. Musicians included Byron, Theresa, Carolyn, Suzy, Emma, Jacob and Helen on bass. Larry Carter was our guest musician, playing guitar on a few tunes.
2011, February 18, 19 – We provided some Scandi music for the Lawrence Barn Dance Association’s Mid Winter Meltdown event – halftime couples dances and a schottis workshop. Byron, Theresa and Carolyn provided music.
2011, February 12 – Our annual Scandinavian Winter Party and Julebukk celebration went very well this year. The evening started with a large potluck meal that included a fine selection of food items. Byron presented a brief story about the Julebukk celebration. Ingevalds Spelmän performed a few tunes for a short concert and then the dance started. There was a large number of participants, approximately 65 people. Ingevalds Spelmän also had its largest number of participants, 11 musicians. Musicians included Byron Wiley, Theresa Martin (accordion and fiddle), Carolyn Young, Suzy Bennett, Jill Adams, Helen Martin (on bass), Ruth Byers (fiddle and nyckelharpa), Emma Machell, Ella Gore, Jacob Hollandsworth, and Lidia Strecker. 2011, February 7 – An article was published in the Lawrence Journal World about my (Byron’s) musical journey, my discovery of Scandinavian music and the formation of Ingevalds Spelmän. 2011, January 1 – We had a small dance party and potluck dinner at Ruth’s house. Musicians included Ruth, Byron, Theresa, Carolyn, Suzy, and Helen on Bass.
2010, December 28 – Byron’s annual house party for musicians and patrons of Ingevalds Spelmän occurred. The evening started with a candlelight dinner including delicious Scandinavian food items. The evening ended, with a lot of music being played (of course)!
2010, December 19 – We provided background music for the opening of the Linwood public library in its new building space. Byron, Theresa, Suzy and Ruth (playing nyckelharpa) were present.
2010, December 9th – Ingevalds Spelmän gave a musical presentation to the Lawrence Music Club. Musicians included Byron, Theresa, Carolyn and Helen Martin on bass.
2010, December 3rd – Ingevalds Spelmän performed on stage at the Lawrence Arts Center along with other musicians to raise money for The Americana Music Academy. Our 10 minute presentation was well received by the packed house. Musicians included Byron, Theresa, Suzy Bennett, Carolyn Young, Ella Gore, Helen Martin (on bass) and Lauralyn Bodle.
2010, October 29 – Byron and Theresa attended and played at the Folklore Village Swedish music and dance weekend. It was a fun event!
On the way home we were listening to CDs that Theresa purchased. As I was reading through the liner notes on Leif Alpsjö’s fine album “Tidlöst,” I discovered that one of the photos included me and participants at at the Folklore Village Swedish music and dance weekend in 1997. What a delightful surprise! I have received permission from Leif to publish the photo here. Leif holds the copyright to this photo. It is a scan from the album since locating the original would be difficult. I am standing in the light from the window in the upper center.
2010, October 8 – Byron gave a presentation of photographs and report on his trip to Sweden this past summer to the Facklan Lodge (Vasa) in Kansas City Ingevalds Spelmän. Facklan had generously provided some funds to support the trip for Byron, Ruth and Rosemary. Ingevald members Suzy Bennett, Theresa Martin, Emma Machell provided some live music to finish off the evening.
2010, October 2 – Ingevalds Spelmän played at the annual Nordic Heritage Festival here in Lawrence. Byron set up his usual educational display featuring Scandinavian musical instrument, art, folklore and textiles. Matt Kirby did a fine job of dressing up as Näcken, looking like the mythical creature straight from the swamp. Andrea Repinsky dressed up as one of the finest looking huldre that I have seen, complete with a tail. Members of the group providing music for the event included Byron, Theresa, Carolyn Young, and Suzy Bennett.
2010, Sept 18 – Byron, Theresa and Rosemary played with the Chicago Spelmanslag at their 20th anniversary party at the Swedish American Museum in Chicago. It was a fine evening that started with a fabulous meal, very good music and dancing.
2010, July 3 – July 31 – Byron, Ruth and Rosemary went to Sweden to participate in a workshop, study with fiddlers, attend folk music festivals and Byron visited relatives. See the complete story by clicking on this link. Be sure to also click on the second page linkof this adventure.
2010, June 26 – “A Beer Dinner On The Farm” – Free State Brewing Company held a special five course meal with various beers at Bart and Margit Hall’s Prairie Star Farm near De Soto. It was an amazing summer evening event and the atmosphere was top notch. Musicians present were Byron, Theresa, Carolyn and Suzy. 2010, June 19 – Midsommar Celebration in Bonner Springs. Musicians present were Byron, Theresa, Suzy and Jill.
2010, June 5 – Our late spring dance party was held at the Unitarian Fellowship here in Lawrence. This was also our CD release party! The event started with a big potluck meal. The tables were decorated with many vases of cut flowers. We gave a short musical concert and presentation. Byron thanked the musicians and other folks involved in this project. Tom Jongling led the mixer dances and a some brief schottis instruction. Musicians present were Byron, Theresa, Ruth, Rosemary, Carolyn, Suzy and Jenny. We played energetically all evening for the dance that lasted till 10:30 with about 20 dancers still on their feet!
2010, June 2 – The CDs arrived from the factory! This evening we had a final rehearsal prior to our upcoming Dance and CD release party. Musicians present were Byron, Theresa, Rosemary, Ruth, Carolyn, Suzy and Jenny.
2010, May 12 – The final touches on the CD project have been completed! We are looking forward to the CD release party on June 5th.

2010, April 25 – We played at a dance party celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Scandinavian Dancers of Kansas City. The musicians included Byron, Theresa, Suzy and Jenny. It was a very enjoyable event.
2010, February 6 – Our third annual Julebukk / Scandinavian Winter Party happened at the Unitarian Fellowship building. It was a well attended event with good food, a few great costumes and lots of dancing! Bill Gooch, an accomplished dance instructor, joined us this evening. Musicians included Byron, Suzy Bennett, Carolyn, Theresa, Jenny, and Jill.
2010, January 2 – We had a very nice Scandinavian house party, potluck dinner, music and some dancing at Ruth’s house. The musicians present were Byron, Theresa, Ruth, Rosemary, Suzy B., Jenny, Juliet and Carolyn. It was a good start for the New Year on this extremely cold day, including the snow and ice covering the landscape.
