Chronology of significant and enjoyable events
2009, December 30 – It has been a fabulous holiday season playing with members of Ingevalds Spelmän, including Ruth, Rosemary and Juliet who are on break from college. The picture below was taken during a fine musical session at Theresa’s house. (Outside it was cold with at least 8″ of snow on the ground!)
2009, November 21 – Ingevald’s Spelmän provided Scandinavian couples dance music at the halftime break at the the Lawrence Barn Dance Association’s big dance weekend event. It was a fine event featuring the band ‘Notorious.’
2009, October 12 – We traveled to Topeka to play music with a group of Swedish folk dance musicians who were on tour from Umeå in the province of Västerbotten. The group is called Folkhettan/Folkfräs. Theresa and I both had an amazing musical evening. The group had performed the day before in Topeka with the Björksta Folkdanslag. Thanks Anton!
2009, October 7 – Gave a presentation for a family reunion near Maple Hill, KS. Tom and Jean presented some dance demonstrations while Theresa and Byron played. Later in the evening Byron gave a brief presentation on Norwegian musical instruments and other related topics.
2009, October 3 – The 8th annual Nordic Heritage Festival took place here in Lawrence. Theresa, Byron and Rosemary provided music for the event.
2009, August 29 – Theresa and Byron provided music for Kristine’s Norwegian wedding. It was a well organized and interesting occasion. We played a beautiful wedding march, leading the wedding party out of the church, around the front and into the reception hall.
2009, August 9th – We completed our fourth group recording session today at the Unitarian Fellowship building. Geraldine Dotson took some very good photos of us, including some during the session. (more pictures can be seen on the ‘Ingevalds Music Samples’ page.
2009, June 28 – July 4th – We attended the Nordic Fiddles and Feet Scandinavian music and dance camp near Littleton, NH. This was the first year at this new location, Camp Ogontz. Rosemary, Ruth, Theresa and Byron attended the camp and took fiddle classes from Kalle Almlöf, Anders Almlöf and dancing classes from Roo Lester. The location was absolutely beautiful and the staff was top notch.
2009, June 20 – We provided background music for the Kansas City Scandinavian cultural group’s Midsommar celebration. Musicians included Byron, Theresa, Jill and Ruth.
2009, June 17 – We gave an evening musical presentation to the Unitarian Fellowship here in Lawrence. Musicians included Byron, Theresa, Carolyn, Ruth, and Juliet.
2009, June 13 – We played at Bayliss and Doug’s “Sweet Home Alabama Spring/Summer ’09 Concert.’ It was a fine outdoor event at their house that included a fabulous potluck meal and music by Kate Wasserman and Stranger Tractor. Ingevalds musicians included Byron, Carolyn, Theresa, Dayle Dryer, Ruth, Rosemary, and Daryl Nickel.
2009, May 22 – Our spring Scandinavian dance party celebrating Syttende Mai (Norwegian Constitution Day) happened at the Lawrence Unitarian Fellowship building. Our delicious potluck meal was accented with fragrant spring flowers. Musicians for the event included Byron, Theresa, Carolyn, Ruth, Rosemary and Jill.
2009, May 6 – Ingevalds Spelmän played at the National Music Week Concert, sponsored by the Lawrence Music Club. The event was held at the Lawrence Public Library. Musicians included Byron, Theresa, Jill, Carolyn, Rosemary and Ruth.
2009, March 10 – Ingevalds Spelmän gave a musical presentation to the West Jr. High 7th, 8th and 9th grade orchestra students. Musicians included: Rosemary, Carolyn, Theresa, Ruth and Byron.
2009, February 20-22 – The Lawrence Barn Dance Association hosted the board members of the CDSS (Country Dance and Song Society) and arranged an amazing weekend event including a Contra Dance, Square Dance and an English Country Dance. Juliet, Theresa, Ruth and Byron played some Scandinavian couples dance tunes for the halftime at the contra dance – lots of fun!
2009, January 30 – I gave a presentation on Scandinavian music and culture at Indian Valley Elementary in Kansas City.
2009, January 9 – We had our second annual Scandinavian Winter Party and again featured a Julebukk theme. The potluck dinner was a feast. I told some stories about the Julebukk history and included some stories related to Thor and his goats. It was a marvelous social occasion. The music and dance part of the evening was also magical and full of energy till the end. We also played some freeform dances that got everyone out on the dance floor. Musicians were Byron, Theresa, Jill, Rosemary, Ruth, and Jennifer Bryan.
2008, December 7 – Ingevalds Spelmän played for the Zion Lutheran Church in Everest, Kansas. Musicians were Ruth, Rosemary, Theresa and Byron. Jim Hurlburt and I had played for them about 10 years ago at their 100th anniversary.
2008, December 2 – Ingevalds Spelmän played at the Tuesday Folk Concert series at Signs of Life Coffee Shop, Bookstore & Art Gallery. Musicians were Ruth Byers, Rosemary O’Malley, Theresa Martin, Juliet Remmers and Byron Wiley. Larry Carter backed up a few tunes on guitar.
2008, November 7 – I produced a Norwegian concert and workshop featuring Vestifor – Toby Weinberg, Ginny Lee and Mikkel Thompson. The Lawrence concert was held at the Unitarian Fellowship building.
2008, October 19 – Ingevalds Spelmän performed at the Maple Leaf Festival in Baldwin City. Musicians were Byron, Theresa Martin, Rosemary O’Malley, Ruth Byers and Juliet Remmers.
2008, October 18 – Ingevalds Spelmän played for a fund raising event at Raintree Montessori School. Musicians included: Byron, Theresa, Rosemary and Ruth.
2008, October 4 – We participated in the 7th annual Nordic Heritage Festival. I set up the music and textile educational display and Ingevalds Spelmän played for a small dance party in the evening. Our group participates in this festival every year. Musicians were Jill Brandenburg, Theresa Martin, Ruth Byers, Rosemary O’Malley and Byron.
2008, September 19 – Dance Party at the Unitarian Fellowship. Musicians included Byron, Ruth, Rosemary, Juliet and Theresa.
2008, August 23 – Played at the first Buskers Festival in downtown Lawrence. Musicians were Ruth Byers, Byron Wiley, Theresa Martin, Rosemary O’Malley and Juliet Remmers.
2008 – August 7 – Played for the talent show at the Vinland Fair, Vinland, Kansas. Rosemary, Theresa, Ruth, Juliet and Byron were the musicians.
2008, July 10 – Sons of Norway – I gave a presentation on Norwegian Traditional 19th Century Weddings. Theresa assisted with the presentation.
2008, June 21 – Ingevalds Spelmän played for the Kansas City Scandinavian cultural group’s Midsommar celebration. Musicians were Byron, Theresa, Jill, Ruth and Juliet.
2008, May 30 – Ingevalds Spelmän and the dance parties continued to improve. This was our first dance party at the Lawrence Unitarian Fellowship. When the Senior Center became unavailable, we were fortunate to find this new location. The old part of the building was originally a large one room school house and is a perfect location for a Scandinavian social event. Musicians at this dance party were: Byron, Theresa, Rosemary, Ruth and Jill.
2008, March 7 – Scandinavian dance party in Kansas City. Musicians were Theresa, Jill, Byron, Rosemary and Ruth.
2008, February 14 – Ingevalds Spelmän played music for the Sons of Norway in Kansas City. Musicians were Rosemary O’Malley, Ruth Byers, Theresa Martin and Carolyn Young who kindly stepped in while I was under the weather and stayed home.
2008, February 1 – Indian Valley Elementary in Kansas City – I gave a presentation on Scandinavian music and culture.
2008, January 4 – This was our first Scandinavian Winter Party in Lawrence, based on the Norwegian Julebukk celebration. It was held at the Ecumenical Christian Ministries (ECM) building at the University of Kansas and we had a potluck dinner, told stories around the fireplace and played music for a dance upstairs. Joyce Slater entertained us with stories and Linnea Johnson and Cheryl Long read some fabulous poetry. Marilyn Myers made lefse. Musicians were Byron, Theresa, Ruth, Jill, Rosemary, and Reva Nimz (on bass).
2007, December 6 – Musician-themed art show at Lawrence Arts Center included a painting of Jill Brandenburg and me by local artist Paul Hotvedt. Jill and I performed some of our tunes at the opening. Sustaining Power Exhibit
2007, November 20 – Ingevalds Spelmän played at the Tuesday Folk Concert series at Signs of Life Coffee Shop, Bookstore & Art Gallery. Musicians were Byron, Theresa, Jill, Juliet, Rosemary and Ruth. Larry Carter backed up a few tunes with guitar.
2007, November 2 – We played for a dance party in Kansas City. This was the inauguration of the new dance facility at Immanuel Lutheran. Ingevalds musicians included Ruth, Rosemary, Juliet, Carol, Byron, Theresa and Jill. We were joined by Rex Couture from St. Louis.
2007, October 26 to 28 – Swedish Music and Dance Weekend at Folklore Village. We (Jill Brandenburg, Rosemary O’Malley, Theresa Martin, Ruth Byers and I) were joined by Mary Allsopp from Chicago. We played two dance sets and had a fabulous weekend!
2007, October 6 – Nordic Heritage Festival in Lawrence. Gave a presentation on 19th Century Norwegian Wedding Traditions. Musicians who participated in the festival were Theresa, Ruth, Rosemary, Jill and Byron.
2007, September – A weekly Irish session was set up. The core musicians are Rosemary O’Malley, Theresa Martin, Ruth Byers, Byron Wiley, Carolyn Young and Rex Armstrong.
2007, June 23 – Midsommar in Kansas City. Musicians were Jill, Ruth, Theresa, Rosemary, Carol Eades-Delnevo, and Byron.
2007, June 1 – Tradition of Scandinavian dance parties reestablished after a two year lapse. We used the Lawrence Senior Citizens Center which has a very nice dance floor. The party was hugely successful, and since then dance parties have been a regular occurrence. Musicians were Byron, Theresa, Jill, Carol, Rosemary, and Ruth. Reva Nimz played bass with us that evening.
2007, April 17 – Ingevalds Spelmän played at the Tuesday Folk Concert series at Signs of Life Coffee Shop, Bookstore & Art Gallery. Musicians were Carol Eades-Delnevo, Byron Wiley, Theresa Martin, Ruth Byers, and Rosemary O’Malley. Larry Carter backed up a few tunes with guitar. 2007, March 12 – Theresa, Byron, Ruth and Rosemary played Irish music for the Pilot Club here in Lawrence at Drury Place.
2007, February 10 – Theresa, Byron, Ruth and Rosemary played music for the Maskeraden ‘Masked Ball’ dinner theater sponsored by the Scandinavian Women’s Society and Facklan Lodge #348 (Vasa). The play is about the assassination of Swedish King Gustav III at a masked ball in 1792. We saved the day by playing Trollens Bridal March at the last minute – thanks to Ruth and Rosemary. The original melody selected for the funeral of the king was rather dull and the last minute switch made it more interesting.
2007, January 26 – I gave my first presentation on Scandinavian music & culture to the Indian Valley Elementary school in Kansas City.
2007, January 13 and some previous years – The local Vasa Order of America, Facklan Swedish lodge has a Christmas party in early January. Byron and Jill have played for a few of these events.
2007, January 6 – Byron, Theresa, Ruth, Rosemary & Jill gave a Scandinavian musical program for the Norwegian Heritage Society at Drury Place.
2007, January 4 – Byron, Theresa, Ruth and Rosemary played at City Hall for Boog Highberger’s ‘filing for his second City Commission term event.’
2006, October 7 – Nordic Heritage Festival. In my absence , Ruth Byers and Jennifer Bryan played for the evening dance party at the festival.
2006, September – I reorganized Ingevalds Spelmän, deciding that there were enough interested folks to make this a stronger group than before. The new group started with Theresa Martin, Jill Brandenburg, Ruth Byers (who started as a fiddle student in 2004), Carol Eades-Delnevo, Rosemary O’Malley (who started as a fiddle student 2003) and myself. Juliet Remmers joined us in 2007.
